A Not So Standard Kyle Listening Spree

So Sunday I was hired to shoot a traditional Indian dance performance in Queens - far different from my regular McCarren Pool Parties, which feature pretty indie stuff (this week it was Deerhunter and The Black Lips). So I found myself in a predominately Indian (and Chinese?) neighborhood shooting a concert at a Hindu temple (well, in the auditorium, but still at the temple). It was an interesting experience, and was cool because I got to see CV Chandrasekhar, one of the dance legends of India. He's 74 and he did over an hour set of Bharatanatyam dance. Solo. It was pretty amazing.

Anyhow, I also just rewatched The Darjeeling Limited, which also features Indian music, and I realized that I kind of love it. It's not my usual cup of tea (or, perhaps in this case, mango Lassi), but man it's nice to take a break from the norm from time to time. Sometimes I just get so caught up in knowing who is the big new name in the indie rock universe that I forget to step back and take a look at the world. Man, I need to take a trip.

So enjoy a few songs - these are both taken from The Darjeeling Limited, but are both pretty great.

[mp3] Satyajit Ray - "Charu's Theme" (The Darjeeling Limited)

[mp3] Jyotirindra Moitra & Ustad Ali - "Farewell to Earnest" (The Darjeeling Limited)

I love The Darjeeling Limited! Wes Anderson is a genius in my book. The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favorite movies. And I love the music from both too.
Thanks for the cool Indian songs and your weekly playlists. Your blog is pretty freakin awesome. :)
