Thao is Going to be Big.

Thursday night was supposed to be a night of awe. It was supposed to be much, much fun, and it was supposed to kind of blow my mind. All of these things happened at Brooklyn Masonic Temple - but they happened not once, but twice! I was fully prepped to be blown out of the water by I'm From Barcelona - I learned that lesson last year at McCarren Pool - but one thing I was not expecting was to be wowed by opener Thao Nguyen.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down obviously had a pretty strong following as the band took the stage, and now I understand why. She's just that damn good.

The songs were catchy, but not in a poppy way - not at all. Rather, they were more grassroots-y than I expected from someone named Thao, and the results are just phenomenal. Not knowing any of the songs going into it, I can't really name the set for you, but upon listening to her album, We Brave Bee Stings and All, all my favorites are on there. "Beat (Health, Life and Fire)," "Bag of Hammers" and "Violet." What really pushed her over the mark was one of her last tracks, "Fear and Convenience," which offers a supremely addictive guitar riff. The more I listen to this album, the more I realize it will be a big kid during the 2008 best albums list making. More than that, I feel Thao has the tools and drive to really push her music to the next level. I'm excited to see where she will go.

More Thao photos here.
