Jam on the River

This weekend I was lucky enough to get down to Philly for Jam on the River. While I didn't know or care about several bands on the ticket, Josh Ritter, Lotus and The Flaming Lips were more than enough to lure me out of my Brooklyn mainstay.

I've seen Josh Ritter three separate times this year and each time has been incredible. The man knows how to write a song - truly the Dillon of our generation, but still massively under appreciated. He scored the #5 record of 2007 on our list, and is poised for a breakthrough in the near future. JR and his band played a killer set that included a Dylan cover and a cover of Modest Mouse's "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes." My hat goes off to this gentleman.

Lotus was a draw mainly for the personal connection - these guys all went to Goshen College, my school, and though I missed them by a few years, we all have the understanding of what it is to be a Maple Leaf (yeah, that's the mascot. Got a problem with it?). Anyway, this was my first time seeing the guys in concert and they epitomize what it means to be a good jam band. Especially after having to deal with the Disco Biscuits 3 hour set the day before (not a good jam band). If you haven't heard Lotus, you should.

But yes, the big draw for the weekend was indeed The Flaming Lips. Having seen them twice before, and one of those being the greatest show of my life (Sleater-Kinney, The Flaming Lips and Wilco from the 3rd row at Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve a few years back), I was excited to see them again. And this time with a camera in my hand. Needless to say they didn't disappoint. The spectacle was as spectacular as I remembered. The bubble. The confetti. The costumed dancers on stage. The guy standing close to mean yelling at Wayne to "shut up and play [his] songs" every time Coyne made a policital statement. The naked girls. The naked girls? That one was new. Anyway, suffice it to say that was an amazing show.

My photo coverage for the weekend was for Brooklyn Vegan. They've done two photo posts - one for just The Lips, then one for the whole festival + some more Lips shots. Check 'em out. Click with care though - there's nudity.

Really like the pictures you took of the Flaming Lips, thank you for posting them. The little girl in the picture is my daughter. Do you happen to have any more pictures on the girls from the left side of the stage?
