The Black Keys Played Terminal 5

And I was blown away. How two guys can make such an incredible wall of sound with only a guitar and a set of drums baffles me, really.

I've been waiting to see this Akron duo, consisting of the highly energetic Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, for at least 3 years. The first time I heard "10 A.M. Automatic" I knew I had to see them, and though I would have loved to have seen them open for Radiohead, Thursday night was pretty damn good. While pushing their new record, the brilliantly composed Attack & Release, the guys managed to play a good mixture of songs from their older albums as well, including the aforementioned track and my other favorite, "Midnight In Her Eyes." But man, I just can't get past their energy.

The sold-out show took place at Hell's Kitchen's Terminal 5, which is still being hailed as a major pain in the ass with bad acoustics and sight lines. Being that I usually get to stand front and center, I haven't been one to harp on the buildings issues, but Thursday night informed me of why people are bitching as much as they are. After the first few songs I had to leave the photo pit, and the place was so packed I couldn't find a place to even watch the band. The first floor was shoulder to shoulder, and neither balcony offered a view of the guys. The problem is if you aren't in the first row of the balcony, you can't see anything. You can hear just fine, but what's the fun in that? I'll just put on my iPod and save myself a $30 ticket.

Enough about my dislike for the place and back to the band... I would highly suggest seeing these guys in concert if that's at all possible. For you New Yorkers, it's definitely possible: the band will be playing a Bklyn show at McCarren Pool on August 7th. Tix are on sale for $30 here, and it will be worth it - sight lines will not be an issue.

In addition, if you haven't heard Attack & Release, please do. These guys know soul rock better than pretty much anyone. I'm constantly impressed.

They played a double night Friday and Saturday at T5 again, and fully agree. Sight lines in that place are horrible, and if you're stuck in the back the acoustics are ass. Plus every douche outside of Brooklyn/Manhattan heard about it an decided to bring them. McCarren was an AWESOME show but enough with Terminal 5.

Plus they've added some weird blinding lights behind them Im not getting... but the sound was great. Sad the venue ruined it.

Haha, I am so happy I am not the only person who hates Terminal 5. I rarely go there & it has to be a band I am truly dying to see to make it worth that trouble. In the case of The Black Keys this time 'round, YES it was worth it. I was expecting to see a touring member with them. I guess they would never think of such a thing?! Amazing set, amazing show.
