One band that I have been thoroughly intrigued by over the past 6 months has been Crystal Castles. I saw them open for Metric at Webster Hall last September, and fell for them pretty much straight-away. Alice's onstage presence combined with their unique approach to music really does make them one of the most original acts around.
The band's rise has brought a sort of cult following, and it seems like they are really the band to watch right now. Their self-titled debut album was just released on Last Gang Records in March, and everyone and their hipster mother is listening to it. The band recently played a few NYC shows, all of which I missed, and all of which were sold out. They are so much fun.
Crystal Castles is pretty solid from beginning to end. At times the songs' electro-danciness kind of meld together like a long DJ set, save the last track, "Tell Me What To Swallow," but when you really sit down and listen they are distinctively different. The record starts off strongly with "Untrust Us," one of my favorite tracks. Other highlights include the rest of the album, specifically "Air War," "Magic Spells," "Love and Caring," "Alice Practice" and "Crimewave." Seriously, I can't get enough of it. If you're looking to have an upbeat, fun day, this is good listening for you - it was kind of amazing to listen to when I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge the other day. I suggest you pick this one up - it's going to be a tough album to beat on our 2008 Top Albums list - get in before they're too popular so you can say you knew them back when...

crystal castles have already lost all cred by lying that they knew nothing of the scene and chiptune artists that it's now been proven that they sampled heavily
