Camera Obscura played South Street Seaport

Friday night was the penultimate free show at the Seaport Music Festival. Camera Obscura headlined the event, part of the River to River Festival, and the night was opened by Brooklyn band The Last Town Chorus. The crowd wasn't quite as big as I expected, but by the end of the night things really packed out.

The Last Town Chorus is Megan Hickey and her band. Though formed as a duo, Hickey is now the only truly consistent member as the lead vocalist, lap guitarist, and songwriter. The band played mostly songs off their 2006 record, Wire Waltz, the highlight of which was a cover of David Bowie's "Modern Love," which has been featured on the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack. While I dig some of their recorded stuff, their live show wasn't too enthralling. All they did was sit and play - not all that interesting from my standpoint.

Camera Obscura was a different story. While the Glasgow band puts out a pretty chill sound, they had plenty of energy and were able to get the audience captivated. Lead singer Tracyanne Campbell was particularly endearing throughout the evening. The band was really tight, and played a variety of their music, though it was almost exclusively from their last two albums - 2005's Let's Get Out of This Country and 2003's Underachiever's Please Try Harder. Other than that obnoxiously drunk couple in the front row, the crowd was very respectful, yet still very engaged. Highlights from the night included "If Looks Could Kill," "Razzle Dazzle Rose" and their cover of Abba's "Super Trooper," in which they were joined by Hickey on lap guitar.

If you haven't yet been to the Seaport for one of these free summer shows your chances have almost run out. The last event is Friday, and it should be a good one - Battles headlining with Deerhunter as an opener. Come out to the Seaport early, as it looks to be a packed out and intense night.

your setlist is wrong. Obviously, you don't really know the names of the songs they played.

The song they played in the encore w/ the girl from Last Town Chorus was "Books Written for Girls", not "Super Trooper."

You just copied the printed setlist they were going to play.

i'll be the first to admit i'm not overly familiar with camera obscura's music. i dig their sound but i'm not a super fan. i did use their setlist - it's sitting in my bedroom - so forgive me for not being perfect with everything i do. i got one song wrong - my photos are still sweet.
